Boost Traffic – How I increased my site reach by 4700%

I have only been running my blog for just over 5 weeks, and I have seen increases in my web traffic, resulting in massive increases in my Alexa rank.  At the end of my first month I wrote a summary of things, as I will do again at the end of month 2 (around August 10).  But what have I done that has resulted in such an increase?

The goal of any budding internet entrepreneur is gaining as much traffic as possible.  Without traffic, your ambitions will not be realised.  Web traffic is the life blood of any website.  From here we can use the traffic to start mailing lists, and earning money through our sites.

There are many different ways to increase our traffic,

  • SEO
  • Blog commenting
  • Blog communities
  • Guest posting
  • Social media
  • Advertising

What methods did I use?

I have used a few of the popular methods.  I have tried out some of the SEO suggestions I have read about.  I don’t pay as much attention as maybe I should – but that is something I’m still working on.

Looking at my analytics, the majority (45%) of my traffic is from referring sites.  Many of these include the sites that I comment on.  They are also social media sites and updates such as Twitter.

A month ago, my Alexa rank was some 17 million.  It was pretty woeful.  As I write this, my rank has improved a massive 15.8 million positions.  It’s currently just under 1.2 million.  I’ve still a long way to go, but it reports as an increase in reach of 4700%.  I’ve been quite impressed by the change, and it keeps me motivated at this important early stage whilst I try to find my blogging feet.  I recently have started to rank for national traffic ranks on Alexa.  Currently I rank for the USA, Australia, India and Japan.

What does this mean?

The Alexa rank traffic information is based upon user information, obtained from those internet users with the Alexa toolbar installed.  The results are based on three month and one month averages, representative of visitors and page views.  Whilst it’s not a very definitive measure, it provides a good measure of the site’s popularity – at least, whether it is improving or not!

Can you be more specific about your sources?

Yep!  So far I’ve commented on blogs, and participated in blog communities – specifically Blog Engage.  More recently I have put more effort into Twitter, and I have found myself being retweeted more frequently – thank you!

In particular, I noted that the traffic I got from other sites were the owners who received my comments.  It’s good proof of it working.

The best advice I received, and acted upon, was to engage in the blog communities.  Social networking is a powerful tool when trying to promote your blog.  It’s a reciprocal thing – I promote one person’s blog and they return the favour.

It also pays to be polite, and courteous.  I recently posted an article at Blog Engage, and I thanked the voters for taking the time to read my article and voting on it.  Brian, who owns Blog Engage, saw this and promoted my article.  Since then I have received 10 so more votes which I probably wouldn’t have got otherwise.

How to improve upon this?

Over the next while I will be aiming to get more visitors, using the same means as well as other methods – particularly guest posting.  I used to have a widget at the side of my site listing some of my goals for 2010.  One was to have an Alexa rank below 1 million.  Obviously this will need to change as I should pass this point by the end of August.

Your turn…

I have tried hard to boost my traffic juggling a full time job.  I’m pretty pleased, and have a lot to learn still.  What experiences have you had in promoting your blog?  How successful has it been for you?  Are there any methods that you used that proved more successful than others at bringing you traffic?  I look forward to your feedback.

  • Mark, I really appreciated this article. It has reinforced much of which I already know, but with a good reminder. I too have become a quick fan of blog engage. My one area of serious lack is SEO, and that’s where I need some help. Majority of my traffic is referral, from social communities and twitter.

  • I am glad to see that you’ve grown so quick so fast. It really is an awesome feeling to see numbers go down, it shows that you’re doing something right. I wrote here last month about how my traffics went up too. http://www.wilsonusman.com/blog-traffic-increase

    • Hey Wilson,
It really is satisfying seeing the numbers following favourable trends.
As I write this, I see your Alexa is about 250k – that’s awesome!
      Long may our successes continue!

  • Hey Mark,

    Great post mate (I love your style – I already said that didn’t I :) )
Glad to see that BE is getting you some good traffic, I have noticed you quite active there – nice work man. I have recently added a hour one spree at BE to my goal list each week as I have been neglecting it of late.
Thanks also for the insight into your own travels, I think you are killing it man.
Oh yeah, thanks also for the shout out (and awesome keyword love) up there in the comments thread.
    Awesome!

    • Hey Alex
Thank you! Love you’re feedback, you’re very positively spoken (or written).
BE has brought me tons of traffic – well, for me it’s tons. My referral rate has sky rocketed because of it. I think I’m practically the only direct traffic.
I’m glad you like my style – could you elaborate on what you like? I’d be keen to learn so I can improve my writing further.
I think the insight is useful. I’m a firm believer that transparency is important on the internet. It’s too easy to think it’s a con or something. I want my readers to know that things take time and hard work, but good results are achievable.
I’m looking forward to hearing more about this eBook of yours!

  • Hey Mark, it’s nice to see that Alexa rank drop so quickly isn’t it? I started a new blog this week and I think the percentage is right up there with yours! :) Keep up the go work and I’m sure it will pay off in the end.

    • Hey Ileane,
Thank you for your comment. It’s great watching the numbers go in the right direction. I think it’s one of the most motivating things after you start.

  • Hey, some pretty good tips. I just started using BloggerBase and Blog Engage, which is how I found your site.

My blog is only a few days old but I have had success using Facebook and Twitter. I’ve had more success with Facebook since I have friends over there then Followers on Twitter which is something I need to work on. Any tips on that?

What’s funny is that my site uses the same theme as yours. I thought I was on mine at first lol.

    • Hey Wayne,
Thanks for visiting, and leaving this great comment! Congrats on getting your BA, I hope the MBA is going ok for you – I’m sure its tough.
I have tried using Facebook and Twitter, as well as some of the social bookmarking sites. As you say about Facebook, having plenty of friends, you will get a few clicks. I’ve been going over the top with Twitter over the past few days, and have seen good results. I’m getting retweets and comments from great people because of it. In terms of tips – you’ve given me some inspiration for a blog post, I’ll pop a link to it here when I’ve it written.
Mystique is an awesome theme. I really like it. But I think I need to get this template changed for a custom one – when I’ve time. You’ll probably do the same at some stage.

    • Hi Wayne,
Check out my post on building a Twitter following. The link is,

    • Hey Tinh,
I can only apologise it has taken me to now to see your comment. I’m glad you took something from the post, and hope you are seeing some good traffic!

  • Hi Mark,

Many of the SEO techniques sound plausible, of course, depending on what type of site you have. – For example wordpress.com sites don’t allow analytics, but the wordpress.org sites do, as per any normal CMS system.

Limitations aside, analytics is one of the biggest helps any website can have, particularly in light of the UI experience, and of course the bounce rate. Would be interested to see your bounce rate progression in your analytics in ratio to your increase of traffic?

A bounce rate of 50%+ is considered poor, but avg of a good site being 30-40% , below 30% and you are nailing it! :)

also, try KeywordSpy for incorporation of KWs on the back end of your site (if you can, depending on the software and blog origin of course!)

Nice work on your rankings!!! Keep me posted!

And of course if you forage into the sponsored links end of things let me know :)

    Lou

    • Hey Louise,
I’ve a self hosted WP site – but thank you for adding your experiences with the wordpress hosted sites.

My bounce rate has stabilised now that I’ve some regular traffic. It’s around 50% at the moment, but has dropped a little since making more efforts to network with people.

I’ll have to check out keywordspy. At the minute I’m using AdWords keywords tool – I’m tempted by Market Samurai.

Sponsored links, do you mean AdWords? If so I’ll be delving into that for another site of mine in the new year. Have a lot of work to do though first lol. If you’ve any pointers, fire me off a message on twitter – or you can find me on Skype.

      • Hi Mark,

firstly, tried on Skype but do you know how many Mark Bells there are!? :) Perhaps try finding me. The username is on my FB.

Adwords keyword tool is good, as long as you set the geography correctly, but remember 20% of new month on month searches are completely new longtail keywords or phases and the KW tool won’t help you uncover these. Run yourself a Search Query Report on Analytics and this will help.

If you need a hand, ask. – It’s what I’m doing for a living now! :)

        L

        • Cheers for that! I didn’t know that about adwords. I checked out keywordspy – it’s a little pricey though.

Added you on Skype btw – chat soon!

          • I have a free firefox add on version in the bottom of my toolbar… try that maybe?

          • I’ll have to check that out for sure!

      • Oh and PS do you know an easy way to change to the wordpress.org hosted site and transfer the .com content?
Im tempted but not sure yet. I’d maybe like eventually to ecommerce-ify the site and at that point it will be necessary, but not sure if I should do it until then… Advice or ideas welcome :) (and rough costings if you know offhand!)
        :)

        • Are you looking to switch to having your own hosting account with WP installed on it?

If so, I’ve no experience, but I’ll ask around and see what can be done.

          • I’m not sure. I can’t use plugins with the .com, i’d need the .org site. That means I’m stuck with basic analytics etc until I’d do that. Not sure if it’s worth changing over until I get ecommerce set up. Then again, I’d need .org to ecommerce anyway :)
