6 Comments Monthly Round up – markbell.me.uk
One month ago today, I decided to make a real effort and start blogging. Whilst in this time I have taken some banter from friends and family, I am pleased that I have managed to achieve something. I know in myself that this website, or my niche site, a Couple’s Guide to Disney, will be able to help my readers, or someone searching through Google for some advice on anything I write about.
This is a common trend I have noted on the blogs that I read. I think it is a really good idea, as it helps you keep a track of your progress, as well as providing transparency for your readers. One of the most important things I think that any writer should be, is transparent. I, like so many, want to help others with their ambitions. Being transparent will reassure people of your genuine intentions.
So here goes, I hope you enjoy what I have written. Here are some of my highlights from this past month
Alexa Rank
I have read on a number of articles that Alexa rank is not always a good measure of your sites performance. I’m unsure what to believe, however the one thing I am confident of, is that it is a good tool for measuring relative performance. When I started out my blog, my Alexa rank was somewhere around 17 million. This sounds horrific! However, I enjoy a good challenge, and so I set about changing this. I recently checked my rank, after a month of running this site, and my rank is now 3,489,132. I’m pretty pleased with this. About 10 days (or so) ago, I also started to rank on country specific ranks. So my current USA rank is 530,192.
Comments
When I started this blog, I was a little nervous about getting comments from users. I don’t think I was going against the norm of being nervous. But anyway, I have received some fantastic comments from some of my readers. I think I have some regular readers too, based on some regular comments. This is encouraging, and reassuring that I am writing content that is useful.
At the end of this first month, there are 45 comments. I know about half are mine, as I feel it is good practise to respond to your comments – a thank you, if you will, for your readers taking their time to respond. I’ll just add a personal thank you here, thanks folks!
Posts
This month I wrote, or published at least, 23 posts. This works out at about two every three days. I’m pretty pleased with this, as it can be tricky sometimes juggling a full time job with a hobby that needs time. I want to boost this over the next few months, but I’m happy with this for now.

Here are my analytics results:

- 4.32 Average Page Views
- 7min 52s Average Time on Site
- 37.28% Bounce Rate
- 48.08% New Visitors
My visitors spanned 5 continents – North America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania. The top 5 visitor countries are:
- United Kingdom
- USA
- India
- France
- Australia
Advertising
I only added AdSense recently and haven’t earned anything from it. Previously I had AdBrite and Bidvertiser, and earned nothing here. My Amazon affiliate has received plenty of clicks, but no commission.
Whilst earning money is no longer my main aim, it is something I want to succeed, so it makes good sense to mention it here.
Closing Comments
I think I have had a reasonably successful month. I want to build on this for next month. I have commented on a number of blogs, the list is at the bottom in my Blog Rolls. I’d like to give a quick shout out to Joe from WebsiteBegin.com, Alex Whalley and Brandon Connell for their comments on my site, as well as their advice on their own blogs – cheers guys!

Hey, Mark.
Great job, stats wise, since you are just starting out. You’re doing a lot better than I did when I first started blogging, so consider yourself on the right track!
As for Adsense and earning revenue, try building up your community first. That’s what I’m doing. Good luck!
Hi Joe,
I think the adsense and monetisation should be the least of my worries. I’m trying to get more visitors – albeit slowly. I’m reading several articles about how to boost your traffic.
Yea I love the stats side of things. I enjoy throwing numbers at things and watching the trends. Bit of a maths geek lol
Cheers for your comment!
Hi Mark,
I think you are doing a great job here. You will still make it once you have passion with what you’re doing.
My blog will be a month old on the 19/20 of July 2010 and when i started, my rank at alexa was 12,623,133 but that didn’t bother me but right now my rank has drop from 12 million to 2 million plus and it’s not up to a month,
Just build your community first before you can think of anything else and always work with Joe because he is my friend too.
Good luck!.
Hey Valentine,
Thank you for your encouraging comment! At the minute I’m finding it tricky to decide what to blog about on a regular basis. Maybe for now I will just blog for the enjoyment of blogging. But I’m not sure if that will hurt my visitors?
What methods have you used to get traffic? I find a lot of mine come from blog commenting
Cheers!
Hey Mark,
Thanks for the shout out my friend, glad you find my blog useful. I really like the transparency you offer here and each time i come I have forgotten how much I like your writing style too, it just flows and before I know it I am at the end of the article and I was only intending to skim – keep that in mind when you start writing reviews mate!
To give you some insight, my blog was born Feb 21 and started out with Alexa of something like 35million, by the third month it was at 13million and sat there until about 6 weeks ago. Talk about Momentum, I now have an Alexa rank of under 150k and it drops daily. As you said, who knows what the frig this means, but I thought it would be a good reference for you to show how momentum just starts to build.
Enjoy the stats, but don’t obsess over them because if you just keep posting then pretty soon it will drop massively.
Sorry I took so long to visit, been busy and for some reason I never got a trackback.
To answer the question above – nearly ALL my traffic has come as a result of blog commenting and guest posting. I also suggest you become a member of the BlogEngage community, what’s your email? I’ll send you and invite (it’s free you just need to be invited for some wanky reason) but it’s an awesome place to share content and find other blogs to comment on.
Hey Alex,
Thank you so much for your awesome feedback! I’m glad you like my site, your words are very encouraging. I appreciate the feedback on my writing style – it’s something I’m still getting used to lol
I’ve just finished reading your article on keyword optimisation show and tell – great work! I’m going to try and implement it here. I’m really looking forward to your follow up article on how to distribute articles.
I would really appreciate that invite, my email is:
