23 Comments How I make my readers feel valued
I recently wrote my first guest post at WebsiteBegin on “Why should I engage with my readers?“. In the post I wrote about how it is particularly important to make your readers feel valued. This is particularly important if you are blogging for business. Readers are potential clients. That aside, I finished the article the the question, how do you make your readers feel valued?
I used a number of methods, each of which I will discuss briefly here. I have had some good successes with the methods too. There is nothing fancy or difficult about it either.
The challenge to making your readers feel valued is meeting them on their level. Personalising your approach to them is vitally important. It is equally important to not overstep any boundaries of comfort. After all, you are nothing more than a stranger – so no prying questions! Here are the methods I use to engage with readers,
Blog Commenting
When someone leaves a comment on my blog, I feel inclined to visit their blog. I will also try and have a look around, read their “about me” page, and try to leave a comment. All of this is excellent for trying to learn about your reader. It is also a good reason for having an “about me” page! The point of doing all this, by leaving a comment on the readers blog, is showing that you have taken some time to engage with them. It is the effort, the fact you bothered, that people really care about.
Twitter is an excellent networking resource. Millions of us use it. What’s more, is just about everyone who is anyone has an account. When I go to people’s blogs, I will make a point of following them on Twitter. This provides an excellent opportunity to see what they are posting. They may also use Twitter as a personal outlet, from which you can learn a lot. Similarly, it is a good way to introduce yourself to them.
I also use Twitter and my blog, to thank readers. You may have heard of Follow Friday. You’ll catch it on Twitter, on Fridays (funnily enough), with posts tagged, #FF. I jump on the band wagon too and share readers who I find interesting and produce some great content.
Article Writing
When you are writing your articles, it is often possible to relate to other posts you have read. This is particularly good if it is something by one of your readers. I’ve done this on a number of occasions to good effect. The other option is to do blog reviews. It’s all about helping each other get recognised.
Skype
A final method I use to engage with my readers is to hook up with them on Skype. Why? Because you can continue discussions which have started on your blog. Using this realtime one on one chat can help forge good relationships with your readers.
How do you engage with your readers? Do you use any other methods?

Good article, I agree about staying active and interacting with your readers. Glad I came across this … good refreshment.
Hey Vitaly,
Thank you for your comment. I’m glad you have found it useful. I think it’s very important to work with your readers – it’s important to make them feel comfortable.
It’s funny that bloggers who are just starting are very busy trying to reach out to their readers but when they eventually make it bit, they sort of lost the touch and genuineness. I totally agree about the need to engage with your readers and co-bloggers though!
Hey Jonha,
It is very important, and a shame that it’s more noted on newer blogs. That said, big blogs capture lots of comments – the author would be there all day doing replies individually. I notice, sometimes I notice responses to really good questions or comments.
I seem to get a lot of contact via email. I like this since I can communicate with readers one-on-one without having to wait till we’re both around to link up. Also makes it easier to explain more complex ideas when people come to me for help
Hey Jillian,
Email is brilliant, especially as you say, if you are trying to find a time that suits both people.
These are good points Mark… can you share where you’re doing blog reviews? I can’t see myself ever getting into the skype chat thing though.
Hey Daniel,
I haven’t done a blog review just yet, the closest thing is my review of Robs Web Tips – eCourse. I would like to do a blog review at some stage though.
This is such a great article. The points outlined are so important and helpful. I never though of it but i think i now have to try out some of these points.
Thanks for some quality points there. I am kind of new to online , so I printed this off to put in my file, any better way to go about keeping track of it then printing?
Firstly, excellent changes to the theme Mark. And nice domain too! 2ndly, I like to help my readers by occasionally retweeting for them when they do it for me. I try to comment on the same blogs over and over, but there are so many blogs out there that I don’t always get to excellent articles in time.
Hey Brandon,
Hope you’re move went well!
Thanks, I think it needed some kind of direction – slowly getting there.
I’m a big fan of retweeting and commenting. But as you say, there are so many good blogs, and not enough time to read them all with the attention they deserve.

Hi Mark, good points! I use all of these ways of connecting with my readers except for Skype – I have Skype, but I don’t use it. Would you say it really is worth the time to look up readers on Skype and connect with them? If so, I may give it a shot….I do think that is really important to be available and accessible to your readers – but at the same time, I am not sure I want to be THAT accessible!!
Hey Libby,
I use skype to network with some of my more regular readers.
I’ve also published quite openly my username on skype, and I haven’t – as yet (lol) – been spammed with new requests which is a good thing. I see where you are coming from though – it’s better to use it for regular readers.
Hi Mark
You just tweeted this so I guess I am allowed to comment
Can I ask techie question please? With the follow Friday I have wanted to join in but not known how do I just do #FF then @whoever on Twitter or do I need to know some code or other techie thing that is beyond me??!!
Sorry I have another question: with the top commentor plugin is it set for one month for specific post or from when person started commenting on the blog? Will it only start counting from when I install or from when person first commented? see I can’t count either as that is multiple questions lol
This is probably basic stuff but I sure find it all a mystery. Thanks
Patricia Perth Australia
Hi Patricia,
You’re more than welcome to ask a question – any time. Sorry for the delay in response – time zones can be frustrating lol!
Follow Friday – you’re spot on with what you do. Just add a few people to your comment @username1 @username2 etc, and end it with #FF. The #FF is a tag on the comment that many use for follow friday. You can search for these hash tags in the Twitter search. Try searching for #FF, or #followfriday and you can see how many others engage with this method.
The top commenter is only able to measure your comments from the time it is installed. You can set the plugin to reset at specific time periods, or not at all. I used to have it never reset, but I soon had many new people commenting, and so to thank them for this I reset my counter at the end of each month.
Hope that helps – if there’s anything else, anytime, fire me off an email.
Thanks so much Mark. I sympathise with the time zones.
It is worse with the US and we all know that when they sneeze we in Oz get a cold lol
So have to do early mornings and late nights to keep up with posts tweeted, interacting with my followers & RT.
You explained it very well so for that I say thankyou. Often those who find techie stuff easy presume I have basic knowledge which I don’t. Give me article writing and grammar any day
Maybe I will leave the top commenter at the moment as I only post once a week and reward my loyal readers another way.

You’re welcome – I was happy to help
Hey Mark,
Fresh tips above, i have never tried skype lol..
Will definitely try, but not sure with who =D
Hi Kimi,
I’m glad you’ve found them useful! I like to use Twitter as a way of breaking the ice, and using Skype to chat further with people. If you’ve questions that are aimed at people, or are doing an interview, Skype is probably the best tool to use.
So true!
Interview will be a worthy step for me to try.
Thanks for the idea, Mark.
you’re welcome. I’ve a few interviews in mind – I just need to find the time lol
