Niche Site Development 01

Recently I wrote on how niche websites are ideal to generate quick income – in theory.  In the article I decided that I’ll be using a niche site to learn about SEO and achieving a good search engine ranking.  It’s a great method – I hope – to put theory and research into practice, giving me experience and content to write about here.

I’d been thinking of a niche site for a while, and when I saw Pat Flynn and Tyrone Shum started a niche site duel, I though I should really get my own project rolling.  A number of other people have joined the challenge and are also blogging about their experiences.

I’ve also been discussing the idea with my networking group.  Tom, from Stand Out Blogger has been undertaking some niche market research, and has shared his research openly through his blog.

My Niche Site Motivation

I’ve mentioned briefly what my motivation is, but I think it’s important to go into it a little more.  I’ve been around the internet for a while, and have created a few websites.  However, I’ve never been particularly great at getting my websites ranked.  I’ve managed a few select keywords.

However, since I started blogging, I have joined many lists, just to get free ebooks to learn many things like,

  • developing traffic
  • marketing
  • advertising
  • seo
  • social media

The list goes on.  However, the best way, I think, to really get a true understanding of what is going on, is to apply it to a project.  Now this site is a project, as is my Disney site.  However, these two sites are quite large, and applying so much to them is difficult.

I decided to work on SEO and apply it to a niche site.  That way I can learn more about affiliate marketing and advertising using streams like AdSense.  At the same time, I can really find what works for me on SEO.

What is my niche?

Many times over, I’ve read that any blogging venture you pursue should be something that you are passionate about.  Now I’ve read different ways of trying to develop ideas for niche sites.  In a really useful podcast, Pat Flynn interviews Glen Allsop.  In this audio, Glen mentions three main ways to identify problems.  I recommend you check out the audio ;)

Anyway, I tried this approach, but didn’t find it was for me.  I focused on things that I knew about.  I want to help people, so that made it a little easier.  Think of everyday problems.  As you can imagine, forcing yourself to think wasn’t being productive.  One day I was out driving, and on my way home, it hit me.

My niche was frugal living.  Living on a budget.  I thought, heck, I’ve been doing that for months.  We’ve worked to pay for our wedding – which is in November.  And we’ve had to cut back big time to cover costs.  But we did it.  I realised that this experience is great for starting a niche site.  I’m not the only one living on a budget.

As much as my budget living was a choice, many others are forced into the position.  It’s hard – of course it is.  So my topic was set!

Niche Site Step 1

Now that I’d decided upon a topic, I brought the topic of niche sites up with my networking group.  This paid of no end, as I received some great tips and assistance in choosing a domain for my website.

I’d received some awesome tips from Tom at Stand Out Blogger, and Pawel from Self Employed Cafe on choosing my domain.  They both used Market Samurai to research.  Pawel actually did a video call through Skype, and showed me the competition and gave me some tips too.

So now I have a domain.  It’s bought, registered and pointing to my webspace.

Niche Site Setup

I’ve had the niche site for about two weeks, and owing to offline commitments, I haven’t had time to really get my teeth into it.  I’ve installed WordPress, and a theme.  I’ve also written some basic articles too, and linked up with some products to promote using ClickBank and Amazon.  I’ve also installed AdSense and AdBrite.

This is essentially what I have so far.  The forth coming blog posts in this series will share my experiences and efforts to rank high on Google.  My aim isn’t necessarily to earn lots of money, but more importantly to understand how SEO works, so I can apply it to bigger authority sites I wish to create.

Stay tuned for the next installments, where I will share some of the tools and methods I’m wanting to use.

  • Nice one Mark. Niche sites seem to be the buzz lately. Frugal living is a great topic because everyone is looking for ways to stretch their money further these days. You, Pat, Tyrone and the others have inspired me to try my own. Keep watching the skies!

    Thanks for sharing.

    Michael

    • Hey Michael,
Niche sites seem to really be the buzz – you’re quite right. I had this one in mind, and started it, albeit, slowly. This challenge between Pat and Tyrone sort of gave me some more motivation.

Good luck with your niche site adventure! I look forward to hearing how you go with that.

Thanks for the RT btw :)

  • Hi Mark,

You took some wise steps studying guys like Glen, Pat and Tyrone. They are masters at finding and exploiting a niche.

Super choice of topic too. There’s never any shortage of people interested in saving money.

    Thanks for sharing your insight.

    Ryan

    • Hey Ryan,
You’re right about Glen, Pat and Tyrone – I’ve learned lots already!

  • Hi Mark,

I am really glad that you have started a niche site of your own. I think ever since the niche site duel challenge between Pat and Tyrone. It gives others a bit more understanding how to go on about it. I will be looking forward to your next installment. Your experience should help out if i want one of my own.

    Thanks for sharing.

    • Hi Lye,
I think the duel is great for sharing understanding and knowledge. I’ve learned a lot from the posts by Pat and Tyrone. With everyone else involved, there are bound to be unique approaches to niche site development, providing a useful source of information for all.

  • Hey, well done with the site and this post Mark (and many thanks for the mention, this skype video call was fun :)

    • Hey Pawel,
you’re welcome – the skype call was very useful – I’m very tempted by Market Samurai!

  • Hi Mark, good luck with this challenge! Nice subject you’ve chosen too, and one that is becoming ever so popular in the online world! Often along the lines of “give up your day job and move to Thailand and live a frugal but fine life” kinda thing. Well, I can’t say that’s bad cos I did exactly that – except I’m in Malaysia rather than Thailand.

I’ve been reading along with Pat Flynn’s progress and his SEO boo boo, as he calls it ;-) Anyhow, I’ll now be reading up on your progress too. Best of luck with this and with the wedding in November!

    Regards
    Joseph

    • Hey Joseph,
Thanks for dropping by – I hope you enjoy what I write about on this niche duel.

How are you finding Malaysia? I hear it’s a beautiful country.

      • Thanks for your reply Mark. Yes, Malaysia is a lovely place – the islands surrounding the mainland are incredible, but cost a fraction of the price to stay than say somewhere like The Bahamas, even though they are equally as stunning.

You’re in the UK? Batton down the hatches – winter time is fast approaching :-)

        • I am indeed – winter will be a bit nippy – bit like our summer was lol! It shouldn’t be all bad. We’re away for Florida for 3 weeks at the end of October to get married. That’ll thaw us out a little!

I’d love to visit Malaysia – this internet lifestyle so many are living.. makes one a little jealous lol!

          • Have a great time in Florida! A dream come true!

Regards living in Malaysia/S.E. Asia and living the internet dream, when there is a will, there is a way. You are building the way in that you are intent on crafting your internet marketing business. It all comes together if you really want it badly enough.

            Regards!

  • Hey Mark,

Great to see you take on a niche site. It’ll be cool to see what happens. I’m stuck with three, trying to get them to rank properly in Google…! Feel free to ask any questions ;)

    • Hey Moon,
I’ve three sites too – but I’m going to use the one I’m working on in this duel as my main work. I hope to learn some things, and write about that here, whilst also implementing the needed SEO.

You should join up too! I know Tom is doing a site as well.

  • I became a fan of this niche challenge.. wishing you and others good luck for the same.. I liked your writing style , it’s really fresh… :)

    • Hi Arif,
thank you for those kind words! I hope you enjoy this series and can put it into practise yourself at some time :)

  • Niche sites, and micro-niche sites, are a great way to find (or appeal to) a very targeted audience.

I’m glad you shared this in your post when you say, ‘I tried this approach, but didn’t find it was for me’… so many people either do NOT try different approaches or they take an approach, a view point, as absolute and do not try to adapt it or expand upon it.

I wrote a post quite some time ago about finding niche markets the easy way, I hope you don’t mind me sharing the link here as your readers who liked your post may find what I share a very useful way to speed up their niche market research. http://www.fmsseo.com/322/13-ways-to-find-highly-profitable-niches-and-online-trends/

    • Hi Karl – thanks for your comment – in particular for sharing that awesome post you wrote on ways to determine new niches worth exploring.

      • Thank you Mark for allowing me to share the post with the readers here, much appreciated.

I look forward to reading more of your posts in the future so I’m grabbing your feed so you will see me around again. :)

  • [...] Mark from BloggersJournal.com [...]

  • I’d be interested in having a look see at your niche site…

    • Hey Larry,
I see you’re part of this challenge too! Awesome stuff – your site’s starting to take shape. Are you seeing much traffic?

My site is, Frugal Living Tips

      • No traffic other than that from facebook and the niche challenge. I need more content on there first off, then when my articles come in later today I will start posting those on ezinearticles to get some backlinks, then I should start seeing some ranking in google. That or I’m going to get a different domain name. :)

      • Nifty site, how do you like that theme? I’ve been looking at that flexibility theme for a while, I might have to check into it.

        • I run flexibility on here too. It’s pretty good, as far as free themes go. Plenty of options. I’ve modified it to put featured images on my front page though.

I’m getting very little traffic – but I’ve little exposure – so makes sense lol. Finding my keywords are a little competitive – but I’m working on that. Have another article waiting in ezine. I guess it’s about patience.

  • I use Thesis, Mark. I was using a lot of free WP themes and then some other themes that I could not figure out how to use them even though they cost a fortune.

Thesis is plug and play – literally. Its not cheap but I sense that it provides an SEO advantantage even if you don’t do much configuration. I will stick with this theme for some time to come cos its helping me to make some decent income and as such its well worth the money spent.

    • Hey Joseph,
I’ve heard a lot of good things about thesis, because of it’s SEO design.

  • Hey Mark,

It’s all about just doing one step at a time, ya know? You don’t have to think of the big picture right now – just consume information as it needs – a la carte.

So, if you need to setup a blog and everything, do that for day 1. Once you’re ready to write content, only then look up the info you need related to that. When it’s time for link building, find information about that. If you keep your head clear from all these little aspects you’ll find you’ll really knock each section down without feeling overwhelmed.

Best of luck on the site!

    • Murray, I find myself guilty of this often. Lots of projects and my fingers in too many pots. I like how you’ve broken this down – I’ll have to try it out for myself!

  • Hey Mark,

I must be super late posting a comment here. I’ve actually stumbled across this post from Pat’s website. He’s created quite a buzz there with niche sites. I wish you all the best there Mark. Will keep up with your progress!

    Bryan

    • Hey Bryan
Thanks mate. Here’s hoping it works out for me. I’ve a bit of work to do having been away for a while, but I’ll get back on the ball.

  • Good post Mark, niche setup is really interesting and all the other websites are doing well with their niche.
