Niche Website Development 05 – On-Page SEO Methods

On-Page SEO is something which is often heavily overlooked by many bloggers and webmasters alike.  It’s something that I’ve recently become a little obsessive over.  It’s also something that the premium WordPress SEO plugin, Keyword Winner, will improve.

On-Page SEO addresses the fundamentals of maximising the exposure of your keywords and phrases to the search engine bots through the correct use of HTML markup.

Confused?  Don’t be!

I recently wrote about how one of my articles got rejected from an article directory.  The article was one from my niche website.  The rejection made me realise a few things about my approach to my niche site.  Fundamentally, I realised that I was focusing too much on the product I was trying to sell.  I had too many adverts, and I didn’t focus on providing something useful to the reader.

With niche websites, the aim is to promote a product by assuring the reader that their problem can be solved by this product.  I wasn’t doing that.  There was little assurance because my excess advertising was going to cause me problems – they were a major reader turn off.

That all said, the advantage, and how I got to on-page SEO is this.  I evaluated my approach, and changed it.  Instead my focus shifted to maximising the website’s ability to provide answers to people.  Ultimately, like on this blog, I want to help people.

The key to maximising your exposure to readers over the internet is by optimising your webpage for search engine rankings.

I have changed my complete approach to how I write my articles.  I’ve now a list of keywords and phrases that I’d like to rank for, courtesy of SEO Revenge.  I believe that these have some benefit as they are low competition keywords and phrases that I can rank high for.

Perfect!  So how do I go about it?

On-Page SEO Tips

On-page search engine optimisation focuses on the elements of my website that I have total control over.  No-one can affect these aspects of SEO.

The first and most important aspects of on-page SEO address the following parts of your page,

  • Page title (I now use the Keyword Winner Plugin for this)
  • All header tags (<h1>, <h2>, <h3> being the most important)
  • Anchor text (<a> for internal linking)
  • Alternate text (<img alt=””…)

There are many other methods to boosting your on-page SEO such as putting your keywords in italics or bold to draw attention to them.  Whilst these methods are particularly low in terms of relevance, every amount adds up.

Another method to improving your on-page SEO is ensuring your keyword density is right.  Anything around 5% is ideal for your keyword.

Frugal Living Tips SEO

My main keyword is Frugal, however, a much more useful term that readers will be searching is “Frugal Living Tips”.  Therefore it is important that this primary keyword is used throughout my website.  It is particularly important that at least the word Frugal features in the title.  Fortunately the All in One SEO Pack makes this very easy.

Each article is written for a specific keyphrase which I have researched loosely using a combination of SEO Revenge and Market Samurai.  It is these keyphrases which I’ll be making a conscious effort to optimise my posts for.

  • Great work Mark and excellent selection of niche because with the economy as the way it is, everyone seems to be wanting to go frugal, definitely going to trend up as time goes on.

    • Thanks mate. The more I think about the site, the more I think it’s a poor choice. I need to market carefully because frugal people will not be willing to pay out on just anything..

  • Hi Mark

Great article and easy to understand! So many articles confuse me with their high tech speak :-(

Only got one question could you tell me what you mean by alternate text? Could you give me an example as I need simple, very simple explanations. Thanks for sharing Mark.

BTW All the best for the big day. I remember you said it happening in Nov.

    • Hey Patricia,
      Thank you!

Alternate text… in the image tag HTML, <img alt=""… the alt, is the alternate text which is displayed in the browser to summarise the image. Hope that helps

These are the fundamentals of on page SEO. I must admit I don’t pay as much attention to my on page SEO as I should. I’ll have to make it a project to go through my old posts and do the SEO.
