Achieving Success – Setting your goals

Achieving success is something everyone strives for.  However, the majority of people get tripped up along the way because they set out to achieve success without planning how they will get there.  Your success is a very personal thing.  Success can come in many different ways.  Some people find it in having a good job.  Others find it in having a good life-work balance.  Regardless of how you judge success, to achieve it, you have to work hard.

Whilst the thought of hard work is a turn off for many people, it can be made considerably easier by breaking your aims in life down into smaller, more manageable goals.

Achieving your success may well seem impossible.  However, the biggest pit-fall most people stumble at, is setting out to get there immediately.  The sudden realisation that what they want to achieve is not appearing when they want it to leads to the feeling of why bother?, or this was a waste of time!.

To work around this feeling, you should really think hard about what you want to achieve.  Success is an adventure that will affect you on many levels.  The importance is to stay motivated.  The best way to do this is breaking your aims down into more manageable goals.  Smaller tasks are easier to complete, and are much more likely to be done in a short amount of time.  Therefore, you retain the feeling of success from completing little tasks, and can begin to see that your success is becoming much more of a reality.

  • One of the easiest things you can do, as you mentioned, to get anywhere is to set the goals it will take to get there. If you are just stabbing at thin air, you will never get to your dreams.

Imagine Nasa before the fire moon landing. If they hadn’t set goals for the progression of the mission, would they have landed? Probably not.

    Great post!

  • It’s funny you mention the moon landings Joe. On any course I’ve done about project management, they have always used Kennedy’s speech to motivate the nation for the Moon race… it satisfies the who, what, when, where, why, how perfectly..

  • Hey Mark,
I like when you said “it can be made considerably easier by breaking your aims in life down into smaller, more manageable goals.” because that is exactly what you need to do if you want to get to where you need to be.
I speak very highly of SMART goals and then breaking them down into even smaller processes so that the big picture becomes more manageable.
Good post about the importance of goals in relation to success.

  • Hi Alex, cheers for dropping by and thanks for your comment! I think breaking goals down into manageable chunks is so obvious that it is often overlooked, and a fundamental reason why so many things fail for people.

BTW – love your recent article on grammar!
