Niche – What’s yours?

Choosing a niche is one of the joys of starting up any profitable internet venture.  I have written on discovering your niche, and how obvious it is.  For instance, my niche site is a Couple’s Guide to Disney.  What makes it different is that I (with my fiancee’s help!) want to provide help, a guide, and tips on holidaying in Disney based on first hand experience.

When I started out, I wasn’t sure what a niche really was.  To me, a niche was something new and novel and not done before.  But can this really be done?  There are literally millions of websites, and chances are that you will be reinventing the wheel.  Here is what I learned.

With the millions of websites on the internet, you will have a hard job finding a true niche.  However, it really depends upon how you look at things.  If you look at it, black and white, you can’t really find a true niche.  Read between the lines, and a niche can be interpreted differently.

The wonderful thing about humankind is our personalities.  We are all unique.  We view things differently.  So what does this mean for niches?

Let us change the word niche to topic – to save confusion.  Your topic of interest can be anything, as I’ve said in my previous article.  Of course to make life easier for yourself, your topic will be something of personal interest to you.  Whilst many of us have shared interests, we see them differently.  This is how we discover our niche.  It’s taking a topic of interest, and discussing it based upon opinion and experience.  Your input/content is the niche – not what you write about.

My Disney site provides readers with information on Disney.  Not information that is readily available at the Disney site, but opinions and tips on enjoying your holiday.  These tips include where to stay, what to do, where you can eat, amongst other things.  My personal site, this one you are currently browsing, contains entries on blogging, travel and my PhD studies.  The topics seem a little random, but as it’s a personal site, it’s where I share my personal interests.

  • Really great post Mark,

    This post is really informative!

I just say niche without knowing the meaning ;)

Thanks a lot for the great post,

  • Niche – What’s yours?…

What niche does your website fall into?…

  • Great post, Mark.

You must hold true to your niche or be destined for failure. If your niche is blogging tips, but you write about cell phones, you won’t get far, now will you?

    • Cheers Joe – you were comment/trackback #100 btw!

  • Hey Mark,

Very true about a niche being a tricky thing to find, but my only advice would be to just start writing and soon you will find what interests you most.
One thing you said which confused me was “Your input/content is the niche – not what you write about.” ?? What you write about IS your content. is it not? maybe I misread the comment?

Also noticed you have already added the BE vote button, nice work. I have voted and tweeted.

    Awesome Mark

    • Hey Alex,
I agree – write write write is the best tactic.
I think I’ll re-write that sentence. It’s a little ambiguous and poorly written – thanks for pointing it out. What you write is what your content is, how you write it and how you inject yourself into it, through personality and opinion is the development of niche.

  • Also, I assume you are pronouncing it Neesh when you say it and not nitch, like these strange yanks. :)

    • Neesh it is… proper english :)

  • The niche that I am currently using is…well, under construction. But, as I continue to work, I am narrowing it down. I suppose that I have a sort of advantage in that I really am not in a hurry & I am having fun with it.

It does seem likely that I will be able to put it all together in the next month or so though (finally). I have been somewhat careful to not just go head first into something as I wondered if I would tire of a subject.

By the way, some Americans pronounce niche as “neesh” too. We usually don’t talk to them much, though. ;)

    Have a great day!

    • Hi Mark,
Cheers for the comment. You make some very wise points!

I think what you have done is great. You are taking enjoyment from what you do. I think it is important what you are doing by naturally narrowing down your niche to what you are comfortable with – otherwise, as you say, you may tire.

Good luck with your blog – I’ll be sure to check it out regularly!

  • Some great thoughts, thanks… I wish I had read this article when I was struggling with finding my niche.

    • Hi Daniel,
      Thank you for your comment

  • When I first started blogging I went into the blog about blogging and SEO Marketing Niche. I was new to blogging in fact knew nothing about it. I was fresh of the block so to say.

I’m a graduate of business admin marketing so I knew even though this was a saturated marketing I should still be blogging in it because it’s my career. That was the determining factor to why I started SEOMKT.

To be honest after about 200 articles I started getting bored. I went back deleting all my old unwanted posts and eventually started blogging on my blog engage community blog. That’s the side blog I have over at blog engage you probably have visited it.

The reason I went there is to get out of a niche market. I found it way too hard to only focus on a specific subject as opposed to writing about whatever you wish.

My opinion would be to stay away from a niche market when you’re new to blogging. Try something more broad that will allow you to keep up with wiring content frequently. But like I said I picked a niche and did okay so if you really want a niche then go for it and do what your heart desires.

    • Hi Brian,
Thanks again for helping promote this topic at BE! I’ve got many hits. I’ve sent out a few invites to get your user base increased!

I think what you say is spot on. Starting out and being very focused on a fixed niche is hard to maintain. I have found myself wondering around various things on my blog. Really I think for now I’ll write about anything and everything in my life that I think will be of benefit to people, and try and bring that out in my posts.

My interests are web development, travel, photography and engineering. I’m learning about making money online too. All this is a little random, and hardly related to each other, but I hope to string them together in some way.

I guess the biggest tip any experienced blogger can give to a newbie is keep writing and practise.

  • Mark, this whole “niche” thing can be a big turn off for new bloggers. I started blogging a year ago and I just figured out what my niche MIGHT be. LOL!
I think that the trick is just keep writing and one day it will hit you. Thanks for opening up the “topic” for discussion.

    • Hi Ileane,
Thank you for dropping by and voting on this post – I really appreciate it!

I think I’m going to follow that advice – just write and let the blog evolve. I’ve knowledge and interests in a lot of things that don’t really blend well (see my reply to Brian, above). So this may turn out more of a journal style blog for now. In future I can do a focused one.

I was on your blog a few days ago – actually your youtube channel, checking out your videos. You had some very useful tips, especially the plugins you can get for your browser to make life easy!

  • My blog niche is the “Blog About Anything Niche” and it seems to be working for me, so I think I’ll stick with it ;)

    • I sometimes feel that way about mine too Karen. Part of me is so tempted to introduce some of my working background to it. I guess it suits my eclectic interests. May put off my readers though to read about aerospace engineering and tips on reading lol.

You seem to have a nice blend of topics, however. Maybe I should take note :)
