What holds you back – Fear of failing?

Success in any walk of life is what many of us aim towards.  Your success is very personal, and varies from person to person.  What is success to you?  Many of us seek out to achieve our dreams by working ourselves to the bone – working long hours and going above and beyond the call of duty.  Very quickly we become immersed in our ambitions.  What if it doesn’t work?

Doubt – is a driving factor which leads to many failed ventures.  Put simply, doubting you will succeed will slowly lead you to believe you will not succeed.  It’s kind of like you convince yourself it’s not going to work out.  Soon, this belief leads you to not succeed because you are scared of failing at what you want to achieve.

The human mind is a powerful thing.  Often people have every day fears – phobias.  The fear of heights or spiders are all perfectly normal.  In a more business sense, the fear of failure, however, is a receipe for disaster.

The belief in yourself that you will not succeed is another form of a fear of failure.  It’s a lack of self belief, of self confidence.  These are very important when undertaking anything in life.  You must be sure of yourself and confident in your abilities.

Often we find ourselves getting bogged down by our own beliefs, and dismiss the comments and appraisal laid upon us by others.  Doing this isn’t helping us achieve our ambitions.

Fear is much like a disease.  If you don’t fight it, it finishes us off.  It becomes an excuse to not work at what you want to achieve.  It’s fairly regularly that you hear people saying they are afraid of trying something because they don’t want to fail.  Whilst this is perfectly rational, as people are not always happy outside their comfort zones, it should not be an excuse.

If you ever want to succeed at something, you should embrace your fears, and use them to empower you to succeed.  Convert that fear into motivation to defeat it.

That’s a pretty powerful statement.  But it’s one I live by.  I can remember when I was younger – at primary school (elementary school), and I didn’t want to go to secondary school.  The thought was scary.  But sometimes in life there are things we just have to face up to.  Anyway, at that young age I’d no idea what I wanted to do, or what I wanted to achieve – let’s be honest, how many youngsters do?  Anyway, now, at 26 I look back and think, I really have come far.  I took control of that fear and have achieved greater things.

I’m pretty sure if you’re reading this, you have something in mind that you want to achieve in your life.  It is probably reasonable to believe that you’re a little unsure of whether you will achieve your goals.  Don’t worry.  It’s normal to be scared of failure – what differentiates successful people from those who are less successful is how you manage that fear.  Share you goals with your friends and family, or on your blog.  It’s good to share how you manage them.  Why not leave a comment here on your goals, and how you are managing them.  Or if you’re worried about failing, drop me a question and I’ll try and point you in the right direction.

  • What holds you back – Fear of failing?…

What holds you back from succeeding? Is it a fear of failing? It’s perfectly natural, however you should not let failure detere you….

  • Mark,

    Nice post!

Fear of failure is always a big problem. NO one likes to not do well and the better you are at things sometimes the more you feat having your efforts fail. The best ways are often just to do it and let the chips fall. but it ain’t always easy.

Looks like your blog is doing well and taking off a little bit. keep up the good work,

    Steve

    • Hey Steve,
You are bang on the mark here. It’s better to have tried and failed and taken away the experience, than to have never tried at all.

Thanks for your comments – I’ll keep working on it!

  • Fear not only is based on previous experiences but also on factors beyond our control. There is no sure way for controlling fear….

  • Hi Mark

Fear of success is just as debilitating as fear of failure. I’ve experienced both. I’ve deliberately sabotaged myself in the past because I was afraid of what success would bring. And I have not participated in projects because I convinced myself I would fail. But I have learned from those fears and failures and now I’m experiencing success in both my personal and professional life. Sometimes we need to go through these experiences to become better individuals. What do you think?

    Thanks for sharing this.

    Michael

    • I agree – I certainly understand the sabotaging yourself thing. I guess success is a great unknown. The experiences are what make us better people after all. It’s what we learn from them that develop us.
